CALCUTTA RACES
CHRISTMAS MEETING, FIFTH DAY, TUESDAY, 20TH DECEMBER, 2011
Penetrometer Reading : 1.3 Cms : Good Going.
False rails were in position from about 1200 metres to about 400 metres.
1st RACE (82) THE PENTIRE HANDICAP - Div I - A Handicap for Horses Rated 00-25, which were stationed in Kolkata as on 12.07.2011 – To be ridden by Jockeys of Indian Nationality (About) 1400 Metres (12.15/12.26) : 11 runners
Tr. Deepak Karki was fined a sum of Rs. 1,000/- for parading his charge VICTORESS with a cross nose band for which permission had not been sought for. Subsequently the equipment was removed before the start of the race.
b g SUPREME CONQUEROR (Vinay Jaiswal) which was very fractious in its stall injured itself, under the circumstances it was permitted to be withdrawn with the permission of the Stewards before coming under Starter’s orders. Subsequently, the gelding was found to have sustained a fracture on hind quarter and was put down on humanitarian grounds.
REQUITE (M Maseyk) was fractious in its stall.
TIGANA (Russell Xaviers), VICTORESS (A M Tograllu) and ROMAN CENTURION (B Sreekanth) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000 metres RAGING BULL (App Shezad Khan) was squeezed for room due to a tightly packed field.
App Ankit Kumar, the rider of FLAMING LOVE, was severely reprimanded in the presence of master Tr. R Alford for negotiating the final bend wide for no apparent reason and was advised to report to Mr. N Bird, the Jockey Coach for appropriate corrective measures.
Jockey Aadesh Kumar, the rider of CLASSICAL ROMANCE, reported the loss of his whip approaching the final 50 metres of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that INCANTATION (Gajender Singh) returned bleeding from both nostrils. Tr. Vikash Jaiswal was informed not to accept with his charge until certified fit by the Veterinary Officer.
The Veterinary Officer reported that FLAMING LOVE returned with a cut injury on left fore.
At the conclusion of an enquiry held after the last race into the running and riding of b h TIGANA, trained by Mr. C Glich and ridden by Jockey Russell Xaviers, the jockey was found guilty to the charge of unsatisfactory riding (Rule 161(ii) in that during the final 400 metres of the race when in clear running he failed to infuse adequate vigour to his riding thereby failing to do justice to his mount. The Stewards when deciding on the penalty took into consideration the record of the jockey, mitigating circumstances and decided to :-
a) Suspend Jockey Russell Xaviers from riding in races from 30th December 2011 to 30th April, 2012 for unsatisfactory riding. The jockey was informed of his right to appeal and permitted to ride work.
b) Fine Tr. C Gleich a sum of Rs. 20,000/- for unsatisfactory running of his charge TIGANA and cautioned him to be more circumspect in the choice of his riders.
2nd RACE (83) THE PENTIRE HANDICAP – Div II - A Handicap for Horses Rated 00-25, which were stationed in Kolkata as on 12.07.2011 – To be ridden by Jockeys of Indian Nationality (About) 1400 Metres : 11 runners
At the request of Tr. R Alford ch g HAREY PUTTER, a declared starter in the above race, was examined by the Veterinary Officer on the morning of Tuesday, 20th December, 2011 and found to have developed painful saddle sore. Under the circumstances the gelding was permitted to be withdrawn. Tr. R Alford was informed not to accept with his charge until certified fit by the Veterinary Officer.
AGNATION (Surjeet Singh) was fractious in its stall.
EROS (C P Manasseh), REGAL BEARING (Imran Khan) and BHIMA (M Krishna) were slow to begin losing approximately two lengths at the start.
STAR SHIP (B Mahesh) ran detached from the field in the early and middle stages of the race. In view of its performance Tr. Bharath Singh was informed not to accept with his charge until shown to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards in a mock race.
3rd RACE (84) THE TANGANYIKA HANDICAP – A Handicap for Horses Rated 20-45, Rated 00-25 eligibe – To be ridden by Jockeys of Indian Nationality (About) 1400 Metres (1.15/1.28) : 7 runners
b g MYTHOS (Shailesh Shinde) was very fractious while being stalled. In view of its behavior Tr. D Byramji was advised to give his charge adequate gate practice before accepting with it again.
BLUE MOUNTAIN (Vikash Jaiswal) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 400 metres PERSERVERANCE (B Sreekanth) making progress along the rails was inconvenienced when SADDLE CHIEF (Afzal Hossain) shifted ‘inwards’. At a subsequent enquiry Jockey Afzal Hossain was shown the CCTV replay of the race and was reprimanded for changing course when not sufficiently clear of the other runner.
4th RACE (85) THE ACADEMY GOLD HANDICAP – A Handicap for Horses Rated 40-65, Rated 20-45 eligible (About) 1600 Metres (1.45/1.55) : 6 runners
ASIAN ROCKET (C Alford) was slow to begin losing approximately two lengths at the start.
Jockey C Alford, the rider of ch g ASIAN ROCKET, when afforded an opportunity to explain the running of his mount stated that he was instructed to place the gelding at the rear of the field and thereafter to do his best on entering the straight. The Stipendiary Stewards while perusing the running pattern of the animal in question, observed that the gelding had performed differently in its previous outing in race No. 28 of the Calcutta Winter Meeting run on 19th November, 2011 in that it was allowed to run freely at the head of the field. Mr. Nikhil Punna assistant trainer deputizing for Mr. D R Byramji when questioned as to why the change of instructions was not notified to the Stipendiary Stewards before the running of the race was unable to give any plausible explanation. The Stipendiary Stewards reminded Mr. Punna of this office Notice dated 27.10.2010 and cautioned him for his lapse in duty.
Jockey Md. Shabbani, the rider of b g CREDIT SWAP, was fined a sum of Rs. 1,000/- for the indiscriminate use of the whip i.e., when the gelding was clearly not responding.
5th RACE (86) THE AMALITA PLATE – For Maiden Horses 2 years old only (About) 1100 Metres (2.15/2.25) : 10 runners
ROYAL SCOTS (Shailesh Shinde, drawn 7) and MY SWEET LORD (Afzal Khan, drawn 8) were inconvenienced soon after the start when IRISH CONNECTION (B Sreekanth, drawn 6) jumped awkwardly ‘outwards’.
AL DI LA (N S Parmar, drawn 10) was inconvenienced when ARANEDA (C Alford, drawn 9) jumped awkwardly ‘outwards’.
ARANEDA (C Alford) ran an erratic course throughout the race and finished off the race on the outer portion of the race track. Tr. Vijay Singh was advised to take remedial measures before accepting with it again.
Approaching the 700 metres ROYAL SCOTS (Shailesh Shinde) travelling along the rails was checked by its rider and lost some ground due to a tightly packed field.
6th RACE (87) THE STATUE OF LIBERTY HANDICAP – A Handicap for Horses Rated 60-85, Rated 40-65 eligible (About) 2000 Metres (2.45/2.54) : 5 runners
AAMAR KAKU (App Shezad Khan) was slow to begin.
The Veterinary Officer reported that LUNAR QUEST (Shailesh Shinde) returned lame on left fore. Tr. Ms. Arti Doctor was informed not to accept with her charge until passed fit by the Veterinary Officer.
7th RACE (88) THE STRINGFELLOWS HANDICAP – A Handicap for Horses Rated 40-65, Rated 20-45 eligible – To be ridden by Jockeys of Indian Nationality (About) 1100 Metres (3.15/3.17) : 9 runners
ROYAL COMPANION (I Khan) which was fractious in its stall jumped awkwardly from the gates losing approximately two lengths at the start.
Tr. Vijay Singh when afforded an opportunity to explain the improved performance of ch g BLUEGRASS (C Alford), the winner of this race as compared to its previous run in Race 54 of the Calcutta Cold Weather Season 2011-2012 run on 4th December, 2011 where it ran unplaced, stated that the gelding which has now raced on five occasions this season had been a very consistent performer except for the previous run and was of the opinion that it may have been due to the rough passage encountered between the 700 and 400 metres of that race. However, as he was very disappointed with the gelding’s performance, he now declared the stable’s No. 1 Jockey on the gelding and added the extra equipment of a tongue strap. The Stipendiary Stewards while noting his explanations advised Tr. Vijay Singh of his responsibility to maintain consistency in the running of his charges.
At an enquiry after the last race into the running and riding of b f NAUGHTY LASS (App Rajesh Ujgare), Tr. Shafiq Khan stated that he had instructed the apprentice be positioned 4th/5th in the early and middle stages of the race and to do his best thereafter. However, he was disappointed with the ability of the apprentice to ride his charge to complete advantage during the concluding stages of the race. App Rajesh Ujgare when questioned corroborated the instructions of the trainer and stated that he rode to the best of his ability. At the conclusion of the enquiry the Stipendiary Stewards were of the opinion that the apprentice’s efforts to ride his mount to complete advantage were wanting and informed his master, trainer Mr. Shafiq Khan not to declare App Rajesh Ujgare to ride in races till such time he was certified to do so by the Jockey Coach, Mr. N Bird and the Stipendiary Stewards.
8th RACE (89) THE ALADANCER HANDICAP Div I – A Handicap for Horses Rated 20-45, Rated 00-25 eligible (About) 1200 Metres (3.45/3.57) : 9 runners
gr g TATTOO (App J K Prasad) which was fractious behind the stall dislodged its rider who was declared medically unfit to ride. Under the circumstances the gelding was withdrawn with the permission of the Stewards before coming under Starter’s orders.
FOCUS (B Mahesh), ROMANTIC SUNSET (C Alford) and GOLDEN SQUARE (M Maseyk) were fractious while being stalled.
The Veterinary Officer reported that ROMANTIC SUNSET returned bleeding from both nostrils. Tr. Vijay Singh was informed not to accept with his charge until certified fit by the Veterinary Officer.
9th RACE (90) THE ALADANCER HANDICAP Div II – A Handicap for Horses Rated 20-45, Rated 00-25 eligible (About) 1200 Metres (4.15/4.20) : 9 runners
GORSHKOV (Vinay Jaiswal) and MEHZABEEN (App Rajesh Ujgare) were slow to begin losing approximately two lengths at the start.
Approaching the 600 metres GORSHKOV (Vinay Jaiswal) travelling along the rails was checked by its rider and lost some ground when I VE DONE IT (App Zarar Alam) shifted ‘inwards’. At a subsequent enquiry App Zarar Alam was shown the CCTV replay of the race and reprimanded for shifting ground when not adequately clear of the other runner.
G E N E R A L
1. As Jockey A M Tograllu was declared medically unfit to ride, Trs. Deepak Karki and Javed Khan were permitted to substitute the following Jockeys in his place to ride their respective charges :-
Jockey I Khan - ARISEN STAR (2nd Race) and LIL WENDY (5th Race).
2. Random testing for the presence of alcohol in respect of Jockeys Md Shabbani, M Maseyk, App Akshay, App Shezad Khan, and App Mohit Singh was carried out and found to be clear.
3. Urine samples. Urine samples from the following horses were taken for clinical analysis :-
TIGANA - 1st Race.
REGAL BEARING - 2nd Race.
SPECTACULAR STYLE - 4th Race.
STORMETTE and BLUEGRASS - 7th Race
