The Royal Visit to Calcutta

Appropos the Royal visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Calcutta in 1912, we are singularly lucky in salvaging a press clipping that appeared in Daily Graphic. It is dated January 4, 1912. Here’s the news.

THE KING IN CALCUTTA

PRESENTATION OF HIS MAJESTY'S CUP

AT THE RACES

The King and Queen attended the races in Calcutta yesterday afternoon, says Reuter, and their Majesties’ presence contributed to bring together the largest crowd ever seen on the racecourse, the huge stands being packed to their utmost capacity.

Their Majesties were greeted with an ovation when they arrived in a carriage drawn by six horses escorted by a bodyguard. Four carriages followed by the members of the suite. Lord and Lady Hardinge and the Stewards of the Calcutta Turf Club received their Majesties, who took their seats in the Royal stand amid a further outburst of cheering.

The race for the King's Cup provided a grand contest, which resulted in a victory by a length and a half for Mr. Galstaun's Brogue. Mr. Goculdas' Last call was second, Mr. Kelso's Hilarity third, half a length behind. Eighteen ran.

The King strolled through the enclosures and the paddock, and presented the cup to the winner. Their Majesties were given another ovation on their departure.
